what is idgham in tajweed? Merge is an Idgham word. The letters in noon sakin, a nonvoweled letter, are required to construct idgham. If the first word ends in noon sakin and the second word starts with one of the letters, the noon sakin merges into the second letter.

What does the term Ikhfaa imply?
- When you see any of these letters, make a soft nasal sound and extend for 1 second.
- Ikhfa means “to gently hide.” Sound articulation and echo in Qalqalah.
Types of idgham in tajweed
Idghaam is dividing into two categories.
There are a couple of additional branches off of these two. See the following picture:
So, what exactly does all of this imply?
Let’s start with the definition of ghunnah.
Ghunnah: A ghunnah is a sound produced exclusively by the nose [This is about the sounds produced by the mouth.
If any of these letters follow either Tanween or Noon Saakinah, an Idghaam bi ghunnah occurs:
- ي – yaa
- ن – noon
- م – meem
- و – waw
When following the rightmost arrow, the first level of the diagram is completed.
When the letters merge without ghunnah, i.e., Idghaam Bila ghunnah, it is known as Idghaam Bila ghunnah.
- ر – raa
- ل – laam
Follow a Tanween or a Noon Saakinah.
The diagram’s first level’s leftmost arrow is now complete.
[i.e., the first level has been completed].
Their idghaam call idghaam Bila ghunnah kaamel, meaning merging without ghunnah entirely in English, using these two letters, raa, and laam.
The “nn” sound from the Tanween or Noon Saakinah absent here, and the laam or raa are spoking without any stress on their sounds.
As a result, the word “completely” adds to the end, indicating that the “nn” sound has been “fully” wiped out.

Idghaam bila ghunnah kaamel
Merging without ghunnah fully / idghaam Bila ghunnah kaamel – Examples:
وَيْلٌ لِّكُلِّ هُمَزَةٍ لُّمَزَةٍ – waylun likulli humazatin lumazah
The two “n”s I’ve highlighted in red have been removed entirely, and the stanza now reads:
humazatilumaza waylulikulli
- The two green letters are now the point at which the two words link together without the Tanween.
- Some pupils have difficulty connecting two words without the “nn” sound in between at first.
- They end up “leaning on” the laam or raa and uttering them as though these two letters have a shaddah. There isn’t, though.
- However, you may argue that there is, in reality, one.
- The terms likely and lumazah have a shaddah on the laam in both situations.
- It’s there to remind the reader that the Tanween (or Noon Saakinah) is not to be uttering in any way, even via the nose.
